A Ten-Minute Interior Routine Using the Free Vacuums

The vacuum bays are the part of the visit people rush. You pull in, run the hose over the driver's seat and the floor mats, and leave. It feels done, and it isn't, because the dust you just stirred up has settled right back onto the dash. A short routine with a sensible order fixes that. The vacuums are free with every plan, so there's no meter running, which means you can do this properly in about ten minutes.

Start by emptying the car

Before you touch the vacuum, take everything out that isn't bolted down. Receipts, cups, gym bags, the kids' stray socks. Pull the floor mats out and set them somewhere clear. It takes two minutes and it's the biggest time-saver in the whole routine, because you'll never again vacuum around a bag and then move it and do it twice.

Toss trash as you go. If there's a bin near the bays, use it. If you can, bring a small bag along for the stuff that has to stay in the car.

Work top to bottom

Dust falls. So clean the highest surfaces first and the floor last, and you won't undo your own work. Here's an order that works in most cars.

  • Dash, vents and door panels first. A dry microfiber towel picks up the loose dust before you vacuum it into the air.
  • Seats next. Use the brush attachment on cloth, and go slowly along the seams where crumbs collect.
  • Seat tracks and the gap between the seat and the console. Slide the seats forward and back to reach both ends.
  • Floors last, working from the back of the car toward the front.
  • Trunk or cargo area at the end, since that's usually the least urgent.

Use the Rapid Air System for the hard spots

Every plan includes the Free Rapid Air System. It's there to blow out dust and water from the pesky areas a vacuum nozzle can't reach. Think of the places where a fingertip doesn't fit: air vents, the seams around the shifter, the crack between the console and the seat, the stitching on a steering wheel, the tracks under the seats.

The trick is to use it before the vacuum, not after. Blast the dust out of the tight spots and it ends up on the floor or the seat, where the vacuum can pick it up. If you do it after, you're just moving dust back onto surfaces you've already cleaned.

Don't forget the mats. Floor mats hold more dirt than the carpet beneath them. Shake each one out away from the bay, or give it a firm tap against a wall. Then vacuum both sides, and use the air system on rubber mats with deep channels, where sand tends to hide. Put them back only when the carpet underneath is finished.

Pet hair is its own problem. A vacuum alone tends to skate over it, because the hair is woven into the carpet. Rub a gloved hand or a rubber squeegee across the fabric first and the hair rolls into clumps that the vacuum picks up in one pass. Sand behaves the same way on cloth seats: loosen it, then vacuum.

Before or after the tunnel?

If you can, vacuum after the tunnel. The door jambs are still wet from the wash, and a towel can wipe them in the same stop. You also won't be opening doors on a dusty car that's about to get rinsed anyway. If the inside is really gritty, there's no harm in doing a first pass before you head in.

Either way, nobody is timing you. The vacuums sit in bays under shade canopies, with a vacuum on each side of the car, so one person can do the driver's side while another takes the passenger side.

If you've got a minute left, wipe the inside of the windshield with a clean microfiber towel. The inside of the glass collects a hazy film that you only notice when low sun hits it, and San Diego has plenty of low sun. Check the sun visors and the top of the dash for fingerprints too.

That's the whole routine. Do it every time you visit and the interior never gets to the point where it takes an hour to fix. The bays are at 6066 Balboa Avenue, open 8 AM to 8 PM daily, weather permitting. Call (858) 495-9274 with any questions.
